Murcia is blessed with beautiful scenery, majestic towns and cities and of course fabulous weather. According to a recent article in Nature magazine, this area of Spain has Europe’s healthiest climate. It’s no surprise, the sun shines for more than 320 days per year, with average temperatures in winter of 19C and in summer 32C making it an oasis of well-being in any season.
The regions coastline extends for more than 240 kilometres and offers fantastic sandy beaches and deserted coves with crystal clear water, all providing marvellous opportunities for the bather, sailor, diver or fisherman. There are delightful fishing villages such as Cabo de Palos and lively historical ports such as Mazarron and Cartegena. There are unspoilt areas of stunning natural beauty unlike anywhere else on the Mediterranean coast.
The Mar Menor
The Mar Menor is a marvellous natural phenomenon and forms the largest salt water lagoon in Europe. This setting provides the ideal location for water sports. Great weather, cool breezes, calm and shallow waters make it an ideal choice for sailing enthusiasts.
The opportunities for other water sports are endless, canoeing, swimming, water skiing, fly-surfing, windsurfing and every other nautical activity you can imagine. With its many beaches, beautiful sand and crystalline waters it is particularly popular with families and young children as the warm, shallow water offers safe bathing and fun for all ages. Mar Menor is just 15 minutes drive from La Torre always proving to be a favourite spot for families.
Murcia City
The regional capital is easily accessible from La Torre via the excellent road and highway system only 15 minutes drive away. Formed in 831 AD it has inherited over the years a rich fusion of Moorish, medieval and baroque influences that are still evident to today’s visitor.
Murcia is an extremely historical, vibrant and friendly city that prides itself in maintaining its traditions. The most important monument in the city is the fabulous cathedral which is characterised by the various architectural styles reflected during it’s construction (1394-1462). There are various colourful and traditional festivals enjoyed through the year.
Murcia is a wonderful city to enjoy on foot due to the extensive network of pedestrianised streets that provide great shopping opportunities as well as pleasant squares in which to relax and enjoy a drink or typical tapas in one of the many cafes and restaurants or just soak up the special atmosphere.
Outdoor Activities
The exceptional year round climate in the Murcia region make this an ideal destination for many outdoor pursuits, sports and activities. The coastal route offers the chance to visit the vast protected natural areas on foot or cycle.
For the more adventurous there is the opportunity to explore the rivers by canoe or inflatable, rock climbing, trekking, paragliding and cave diving as well as deep sea diving.
The Sierra de Espuna is one of Spain’s largest nature reserves, it covers a vast area of mountains covered with pine forests and fauna and is home to a vast array of indigenous wildlife, an ideal place for walking, mountain biking or simply enjoying the tranquillity.
Beaches
La Torre is situated with easy access to transport links, 15 minutes from Murcia airport, 45 minutes to Alicante airport and only 15 minutes drive to the Mar Menor boasting the most beautiful and safe beaches in the region, many of which have been awarded the Q mark for quality, and feature gorgeous sand & deserted paradise dunes that go on for miles. beautiful sand and crystalline waters it is particularly popular with families and young children as the warm, shallow water offers safe bathing and fun for all ages.
If you want a day at the beach, head south for a 15 minute drive to the village of Los Alcazares. (no high rise here) Situated on the Mar Menor the water is shallower and 5c warmer than other beaches along this coast and perfect for children or learning watersports. Los Alcazares has a splendid 2 mile palm tree lined promenade, dotted with beach cafes and restaurants.
